The ceremony to present the grant was held on 10 October 2013. This year's grant was awarded to Sandra Le Quellec, an intern in the biological haematology department at the Édouard Herriot de Lyon Hospital. Sandra is doing her doctoral thesis on haemophilia B in the Haemophilia Research Unit within the same hospital. This rare, hereditary haemorrhagic disease affects only boys. Repeated haemorrhages lead to a crippling complication that affects the knees in particular. The objective of this research is to increase the effectiveness and reduce the cost of current treatment methods in order to improve patients' quality of life.
Since 2010, the fund for "combating rare diseases" has increased the level of support granted to research and associations.
